Labor and delivery is not something most women expecting a baby look forward to. Although it is such a special time it will likely be one of the most uncomfortable times in your life. Taking special items with you to the hospital may make the whole experience a little more bearable.
The most obvious thing to think about is what clothing you will be needing. The cozier the bed clothes you have the better. You will be provided with the hospital attire during labor and delivery but afterwards you will want to have a comfortable non-binding pair of pajamas to slip into. A pair of houseslippers are nice to have on hand during labor as many women complain of cold feet. Also do not forget lots of extra pair of undergarments. If you will be breastfeeding invest in a good nursing bra, it really makes the whole job much eaiser.

While in actual labor you will want a few comfort items to take along. You may be there a while unfortunetely so take something to occupy your time such as a book or craft of some sort. Do not forget your spouse, he will be restless to, make sure he has a good magazine and some snacks on hand. Unfortuntely the hospital will most likely not allow you to snack.
While trying to relax as best you can try listening to some music on your CD player. Some good mellow tunes will probably sound more relaxing to you then the sound of all the hospital equiptment surrounding you. You may also opt to watch a bit of television while you are waiting.
Make sure you bring a massager of some sort whether it be your husband or a device to work out the stiffness. |
It is hard to get comfortable in those hospital beds and a little stimulation of the muscles is good for blood circulation. Something else to make the bed a little more cozy is to bring your own pillow from home. It is good to have something that does not feel so industrialized.
You may find that your hair will get in the way especially if you have long hair. You will not appreciate your hair getting in the way while you are trying to deliver the baby. Take something to pull it away from your face. You also may find your lips getting chapped during all the breathing. Make sure to pack some sort of chap stick or lip balm.
Bring something personal to you from home to use as a focal point. You may want to use a picture of another child or your pet, just something to focus on during the times when you are trying to bear the pain. Speaking of pain, something to squeeze on other than hubbys hand might make him most appreciative.
At the time pictures and films will not sound too appealing but later you will learn to appreciate them. Do not forget to bring extra film and cassettes if the hospital allows it.
Finally after considering yourself and comfort techniques do not forget baby will be going home with you. Pack a couple of cozy sleepers and a going home outfit for the little one. The hospital should supply you with all the baby care items in the nursery. With all these considerations in mind it should make your stay a little more comfortable. Make sure you take full advantage of the time in the hospital, let the nurses take care of you and pamper you as well as your spouse, after all, it will be short lived.
